Second Home Week Lottery — How to Allocate Time Fairly

11 March 20265 min

The biggest conflict in a shared second home arrangement is rarely about money — it's about time. Who gets the Easter week? Who takes the school holidays? And is it fair that the same family always gets the best weeks?

The problem with "first come, first served"

Many co-ownership groups use a "first come, first served" approach: whoever books first gets the slot. The problem is that this favours those who are quickest — not those with the greatest need. Over time, it creates frustration and a sense of unfairness.

Three models for fair allocation

1. Lottery draw

Everyone submits their wishes for popular weeks. Then a random draw determines who gets which weeks. Everyone has an equal chance.

Pros: Objectively fair. No arguments.

Cons: Pure luck — you might end up with less desirable weeks several years running.

2. Priority system

Each family member has a set number of priority points. You spend points on the weeks you want most. Those who spend the most points win. Points reset each year or rotate.

Pros: Rewards strategic choices. Ensures everyone gets top weeks over time.

Cons: Slightly more complex to manage.

3. Fixed rotation

Popular weeks rotate on a fixed pattern. Family A gets Easter this year, Family B next year, and so on.

Pros: Predictable. Everyone knows what they're getting.

Cons: Not very flexible. Works best with a stable group.

How it works in Bungaflow

Bungaflow has built-in calendar allocation that supports lottery draws and a priority system:

  1. The admin creates a season — e.g. "Easter 2026" or "Summer Holiday 2026"
  2. Everyone submits their wishes — which weeks they prefer
  3. The draw is run — either randomly or based on priority
  4. Results are displayed — and bookings are automatically added to the calendar

Everything happens in the app. No spreadsheets, no long email threads, and no arguments about who "always gets Christmas."

Tips for a smooth allocation

  • Agree on the rules before the season starts
  • Use a combination of lottery draws for peak weeks and open booking for regular weeks
  • Give everyone the option to swap among themselves after the draw
  • Document the rules in writing — it prevents conflicts

With Bungaflow, the admin work is taken care of. The app handles the draw, displays the results, and adds the bookings straight to the calendar. Try it free at bungaflow.com.
